Steel tubing and carbon steel pipe process using tube mill

steel tubing pipes and tubes

Seamless tubes are typically more light weight, and have thinner walls. They are used for bicycles and transporting liquids. Seamed tubes are heavier and more rigid. They have a better consistency and are typically straighter. They are used for things such as gas transportation, electrical conduit and plumbing. Typically, they are used in instances when the pipe is not put under a high degree of stress.

Certain pipe characteristics can be controlled during production. For example, the diameter of the pipe is often modified depending how it will be used. The diameter can range from tiny pipes used to make hypodermic needles, to large pipes used to transport gas throughout a city. The wall thickness of the pipe can also be controlled. Often the type of steel will also have an impact on pipe's the strength and flexibility. Other controllable characteristics include length, coating material, and end finish.

The primary raw material in pipe production is steel. Steel is made up of primarily iron. Other metals that may be present in the alloy include aluminum, manganese, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, and zirconium. Some finishing materials are sometimes used during production. For example, paint may be used if the pipe is coated. Typically, a light amount of oil is applied to steel pipes at the end of the production line. This helps protect the pipe. While it is not actually a part of the finished product, sulfuric acid is used in one manufacturing step to clean the pipe.

The Manufacturing Process of Carbon Steel Pipe making and Steel Tubing

Carbon steel pipes and steel tubes are made by two different processes. The overall production method for both processes involves three steps. First, raw steel is converted into a more workable form. Next, the pipe is formed on a continuous or semicontinuous production line. Finally, the pipe is cut and modified to meet the customer's needs.

Step 1 : Slitting Line - steel sheets are slitted to suitable width

Strip coil slitting line is mainly used in uncoiling, leveling and shearing cold-rolled and hot-rolled, carbon / stainless steel coiled sheets into various specifications of specified steel sheet. Through unrolling, leveling and cutting.the rolled steel plates are turned into flat plates of the desired length and width. Automatic steel sheet slitting machine is a cut-to-length machine that can cut the steel sheet horizontally and vertically.

Sheet coil slitting line mainly includes coil car, uncoiler, primary leveler, first bridge, fixed width slitting knife stand, second bridge, tention pad stand, recoiler and elevative plateform. All of the mechanical movement are controlled collectively. Provided with AC/DC motors, reliable hydraulic system and high-grade programmable control system. It can make sure of accurate feeding & shearing.

The uncoiler apparatus includes a vertically and laterally movable spindle, which has an expandable mandrel for gripping and supporting the mult coil being unwound. The uncoiler further includes a deck for supporting the mult coils that are awaiting uncoiling and an apparatus for laterally displacing the mult coils in successive fashion to a position where they are successively gripped and supported by the spindle. TIG Mill
Step 2 : High Frequency Welder (Carbon Steel Pipe Tubing)/ TIG Welding ( Steel Tubing)

High Frequency Welding - The process entails passing a continuous austenitic stainless steel strip through pre-weld rolls enclosed in a forming housing to produce a continuous tubular shape having opposing edges separated by a longitudinal gap. While the gap is maintained with a seam guide and a liquid-free gas mixture of an inert gas and a gaseous flux is directed at the gap and into an interior of the tubular shape, the tubular shape is caused to pass through a high frequency induction coil to cause heating of the opposing edges of the tubular shape. Pressure is then applied to the tubular shape with weld rolls to force the opposing edges together and form a continuous tubing having a continuous butt weld joint. The weld joint is then quenched with an inert gas without the assistance of a liquid coolant. After stainless steel tube is welded, forming, cooling, size adjusting and tube cutting are done to enhance its preciseness.

TIG Mill| tube mill

TIG Welding/Plasma Welding - The best way to weld steel tubing is by using TIG welding method. It uses a non-consumable electrode that allows you to control the heat. The electrode is held by a torch and inert gas flows through and around it. The tubing is heated and melted to join them together and the gas shields the arc and avoids oxidation. Its main advantage is that it is a precise method and is the most recommended for steel tubing.

TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas Welding) welding is also called GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding). TIG welding is the most important procedure of tube mill. In TIG welding an arc is formed between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the component being welded. Gas is fed through the torch to shield the electrode and molten weld pool. If filler wire/rod is used, it is added to the weld pool.

Typical shielding gases used are argon, argon & hydrogen and argon and helium. Helium is generally added to increase the heat input (increasing welding speed or weld penetration). Hydrogen will result in cleaner looking welds and also increase heat input. TIG welding is popular for tub mill buyer who’s looking for producing high quality steel tubes or steel pipes.

  • Superior quality welds
  • Welds can be made with or without filler metal
  • Precise control of welding variables (heat)
  • Low cost in comparison with processes such as electron beam and laser welding

Plasma arc welding (PAW) is a advanced version of the tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process.

    Advantages of Plasma Welding
  1. Less sensitivity to changes in Arc length.
  2. Recessed electrode reduces the possibility of tungsten inclusions in the weld and can substantially increase the period between electrode dressings resulting in increased life.
  3. Weld in a single pass up to 6 mm plates in square butt position and 10 mm plates in only two passes.
  4. Keyhole mode of welding gives smaller heat affected zone resulting in reduced strength loss at the joint for heat treated metals, promotes less grain growth which gives better ductility.
  5. Reduced weld time results in less embrittlement by carbides and complex intermetallic compounds for stainless steel and super alloys.
  6. Equalization of distortion stresses results in less residual stress. 7. Less filler metal required in keyhole mode significantly reduces porosity.
Step 3: Peripheral Equipments for Carbon Steel Pipe Making/ Steel Tubing- End Facing Machine

End facing machine is used for the purpose of chamfering and deburring of the tubes. Tubes are chamfered from the outer, inner and front face by three different tools. There are also different peripheral equipments for tubes that are produced by tube mills- Round/Square Tube Polish Machine, Straighten Machine, and Saw Blade Grinding Machine.

Factors that Determine Carbon Steel Pipe And Steel Tubing Speeds

The major factors to consider in a high-frequency carbon steel pipe making and steel tubing line are:

  • Tube diameter, material, and wall.
  • Weld power available.
  • Horsepower available.
  • Type of cutoff and length of the part.
  • Accumulator capacity.

The size of the tube and the welding and forming characteristics of the material are critical in determining production speed. Weld power and drive power should be matched. Sufficient horsepower should be available to support the ability of the welder to weld the tube and the type of cutoff and its accelerator may affect production speeds.
